Bailuo people (a branch of Yi people) live in the southeastern part of Wenshan, Yunnan. The ethic group owns a long and profound history and uses its own language. Unfortunately, the language is only verbal because it does not have its own characters or letters. The lifestyle of the Bailuo people is different from that of the other Yi people. They preserve traditional ways of dressing, folk customs and a unique architectural style called “Ganlan”.

Yi people in Napo County were not originally from here. It is said that they moved from Kunlun Mountains, traveled through Erhai Lake, Liangshan, Dali and finally settled in Napo County, Guangxi. The population of the White Yi people is less than 2000; most of them live in villages like Dala, Nianbi, Zhexiang, Powu, etc. Dala Village, 14.5 km from town on Badang Mountain, is the major habitation of White Yi people in Napo County. After thousands of years of nomadic life and constant hostilities they face, the White Yi people developed their culture that embodies tenacity and unity.

Heiyi Zhuang is a branch of the Zhuang ethnic group that mainly lives in Napo County, Guangxi. The most special thing about them is that they regard black as beautiful. So they are also known as the Black-clothed Zhuang. Due to centuries of warfare in history and ethnic migration, many of them ended up living deep in the mountains, isolated from the world outside with their original culture.

Pina Bausch (1940.7.27-2009.6.30) was born in Solingen, Germany. She started learning classic ballet and modern dance in Folkwang School in early age. After graduation in 1959, Bausch left Germany with a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service to continue her studies at the Juilliard School in New York City in 1960. Her teachers included Antony Tudor, José Limón, Alfredo Corvino and Paul Taylor. She returned to Germany in 1963.
